DENHAM SPRINGS -- Livingston Parish SADD will host its annual summer camp July 17-21 at Gray’s Creek Elementary, 11400 La. 1033, Denham Springs.

The free camp is taught by high school students who are alcohol, tobacco and drug free, according to Dylan Ivy, director of Livingston SADD.

Teens were selected from schools across the parish, chosen because of their commitment to build a better community, he said.

The program’s theme, “Under the Sea, Above the Influence,” focuses on teaching campers how to live drug-free lives, Ivy said.

Each day, the teens will deliver life skills and preventative lessons.

The research-based lessons are designed for child in grades 1-5, he said.

Topics include the importance of the human brain, growth and development, decision-making skills, vehicle and bicycle safety, Internet safety, substance-abuse prevention and character development.

Campers learn these skills through age-specific group activities, role plays, structured discussions and parent involvement, Ivy said.

LP SAAD’s summer camp is a community effort and plans are underway to partner with several organizations, such as Lexlee’s Kids, Louisiana State Police, Narconon New Life Retreat Center, Pinewood and Livingston Parish fire departments.

The camp will begin at 8 a.m. each morning and end at noon, except on Friday, Ivy said.

A closing ceremony will begin at noon July 21. The ceremony will a feature all the participants in the camp, he said.

Livingston Parish SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) was chartered to fill the void created when LYP Services, home of Louisiana SADD, closed in 2010.

LP SADD supports the growth and development of SADD chapters throughout the parish.
