BILOXI, Miss. – The Livingston Parish News brought home 48 awards, including 14 first-place honors and second place in General Excellence in Division 3 at the Better Newspaper Competition at the Louisiana Press Association/Mississippi Press Association Joint Convention.
Awards were given in individual contests for first, second and third places. The editorial contests ranged from news story writing to graphic design.
Advertising entries were judged based on design, creativity and effectiveness.
The Texas Press Association judged the competition this year.
Forty-seven newspapers, publications, and college and university student newspapers submitted 2,408 entries.
News graphic designer Paul Hatton led the pack with six individual awards.
He swept the Division 3 category for Staff Generated Black & White Ad and Best Service Ad (Non-Retail).
He captured first and second in Staff Generated Color Ad, as well as the top prize in Best Retailer Ad and Best Ad Campaign.
In addition, Hatton won first place and third place for Most Effective Use of Graphic Design on a Single Page.
Hatton also teamed with reporter Jamie Webb for Best Headline. He also won second- and third-place honors for In-Paper Promotion and third place for Best Non-Traditional Use of Space Ad.
The staff of The News won first place in Division 3 for Best Overall Website.
Photographer Crystal Loguidice and sports editor Randy Rosetta each garnered two first-place honors.
LoGuidice won the top honors for Best Photo Package and Best Feature Photo.
Rosetta led the division with the top award for Best Sports Story and Best Sports Column.
Reporter John Dupont won first and third place for Best News Story, while the late Mike Dowty – longtime editor of The News, who died in March 2016 – garnered second.
Dowty also won second for Best Continuing Coverage of a Single News Event.
Former Lifestyle editor/photographer Tommy Comeaux won first and third place for Best Feature Story, as well as second place for Best Lifestyle Coverage.
Comeaux also won second place for Best Feature Photo and teamed with former staff writer Lisa Dowty for third place in the competition for Best Photo Package.
Editor McHugh David won third place in the competition for Best Column for his “Follow the Money” column, while former staff photographer David Normand received a third-place honor for Best News Photo.
