PRAIRIEVILLE – A Springfield woman died and a Norwood man faces criminal charges in a five-vehicle crash March 17 in Ascension Parish, according to the Louisiana State Police.

Kathie Polite, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office, said State Trooper Bryan Lee, State Police Troop A spokesman.

Polite was properly restrained but sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash, Lee said.

David Henley, 59, was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on charges of negligent homicide and disregarding a traffic control, he said.

The five-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on March 17 at the intersection of Airline Highway (U.S. 61) and Post Office Road (La. 929, Lee said.

Henley was northbound on Airline Highway in a 2000 Mack dump truck when he failed to stop for the red light at the intersection with Post Office Road, the trooper said.

Polite, in a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox, was westbound on Post Office Road and began making a left turn onto Airline Highway southbound after her traffic signal turned green.

Henley’s dump truck struck Polite’s vehicle on its driver’s side, he said.

The impact caused both vehicles to cross the median into the southbound lanes of U.S. 61 and hit three other vehicles stopped in the turn lane, Lee said.

One other driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash but a toxicology sample was taken from all drivers for analysis, he said.
