George Smith, Sr., 94, a native of Vacherie and longtime resident of Denham Springs, died at home Friday, December 30, 2016. Mr. George, known affectionately as “the bread man,” delivered Holsum bread to local businesses for 30 years. A decorated WWII veteran, he served as a B-29 Right Gunner in the Army Air Corps, receiving numerous medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery. Visitation was from 10 noon, followed by a memorial service on Saturday, January 7, at First United Methodist Church, Denham Springs, where he was a faithful member for almost 60 years. Survived by daughter Patti Smith Peairs, grandchildren Chris, Jamie, Michelle, Lonnie and Tracy, and 13 great-grandchildren.
