DENHAM SPRINGS -- There are good days and bad days in sports.

Denham Springs High has had a lot of tough days in a season of transition. None have been as tough as Tuesday night against high-flying Scotlandville, especially the final three quarters.

After nearly matching the Hornets for 8 minutes, DSHS scrounged up only 14 points over the last 24 minutes in a 69-28 loss.

Scotlandville (24-2, 5-0 District 4-5A) wrapped up the first round of district play without a loss by seizing command in the second quarter and never letting up.

The Hornets’ talent and depth wore Denham down quickly, with Ja’Vonte Smart pacing four players in double digits. Scotlandville led only 18-14 after the opening quarter but methodically eased away and then erupted for 25 points in the last period.

Smart registered 11 points in that last frame, while LaMarq Williams led the way with 10 on the third quarter.

Dorsett Washington led DSHS with 10 points while Ray Whitley added 8.

The Jackets get the second round of district play started at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Live Oak. DSHS topped the Eagles 40-33 to begin league play.
