Denham Springs High played only one game last week and the Lady Jackets fell in a thriller to East Ascension in five sets Monday.
DSHS forced a fifth set after winning sets three and four to tie the match 2-2. After winning the first two sets by 32 combined points, the Lady Spartans took care of business in the fifth set, pulling away 16-14 to hand the Lady Jackets their third loss in four games.
Denham (13-16, 2-3 Division I, District 4) has a couple of district matches next week, beginning with Walker at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The Lady Jackets travel to Dutchtown for a match with the Lady Griffins on Monday.
Walker runs into St. Amant buzz saw
The Walker volleyball team wrapped up another winless week with a pair of losses to Destrehan and St. Amant.
Last Thursday, the Lady Cats fell to Destrehan in straight sets. Walker narrowly lost the first set, 22-25, before Destrehan turned up the pressure and dropped the Lady Cats by 14 and 15 points, respectively, over the final two sets.
Things got worse against district heavyweight St. Amant, currently the first-place team in Division I, District 4. Once again, Walker fell in straight sets, making it six consecutive games since the Lady Cats last won a set.
The Lady Gators won the three sets 25-10, 25-10 and 25-11.
“St. Amant is playing as well as they’ve played all year,” WHS coach Randy Sandifer said. “We competed well. We just had trouble matching their front line. They’re better at the net than most teams.”
Walker (6-22, 0-6 Division I, District 4) returns to the court with a pair of road games this week: Wednesday against district-foe Denham Springs High and Thursday in a non-league match Pearl River. The Lady Cats will be back at home Monday when they host East Ascension.

After taking on Pearl River, the Lady Bulldogs conclude the season with games against Loranger and Live Oak. Springfield beat Loranger, 3-1, in the first meeting this season but fell to LOHS, 2-1.
