The Variety Society

Students in the Denham Springs High School Theatre Department rehearse a dance scene for their production of “The Variety Society,” which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19, in the DSHS cafeteria, beginning at 7 p.m. both nights.

The Denham Springs High School Theatre Department is giving audiences quite the variety in its next production.

It’s even in the name.

The DSHS theatre department will perform two nights of “The Variety Society” student showcase, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18-19, in the school’s cafeteria, beginning at 7 p.m. both nights.

The play is broken up into two acts and will feature everything from serious monologues to goofy vines, as well as singing, dancing, humorous skits and commercials.

Each act is centered around a collection of narrators who are either flipping through channels on television (Act I) or scrolling through videos on their phones (Act II), giving people of all ages something to enjoy.

“We are literally bridging the age gap with this play,” joked theatre teacher Donna Van Oss.

Tickets for the show are $5 each, and there will also be Mexican food and other concessions for sale. Van Oss said proceeds from concessions will go toward a former DSHS theatre student's sibling, who is battling cancer.

This is one of two productions the DSHS Theatre Department will deliver to audiences this spring. The next production will be the student-written play “A Pelican Story,” which will take place later this semester.
