SPRINGFIELD -- Thursday’s 62-38 loss to Doyle marked the sixth-consecutive loss for the Springfield Lady Bulldogs, but in the grand scheme, it was just one of many learning experiences this season.

Even with the return of senior Sarah Simeon, who managed to bounce back from a torn ACL over the summer, the team has struggled to find any defensive support behind forward Kiarra Westbrooks and consistently conceded rebounding matchups to larger teams.

Still, there were some bright spots: Freshman KaitlynNorman has become a regular at the top of the score sheet, while Blair Simon, Jamiracle Joseph, Johneisha Joseph and Lori Martin are all underclassmen who have seen significant time.

The Lady Bulldogs showed that they were still a relatively young team Thursday, struggling to keep pace with Doyle’s well-polished offensive attack. The Lady Tigers found little need to score from the outside, routinely scoring from 12 feet and in.

Sydney Taylor said the game was a chance to work  on some things before the playoffs.

“We really just tried to work on our half-court defense when we’re up like we were,” Taylor said. “At this point, we were just trying to perfect stuff.”

Despite trailing heavily through most of the game, Springfield’s LeAnn Threeton held on to one thought: Go about your business as usual, regardless of score.

“We had to treat it like any other game. We couldn’t let it get to us,” Threeton said. “We weren’t being coachable for a while there. We were just doing things we weren’t supposed to do, and we definitely weren’t playing our style of basketball.”

Westbrooks finished with 17, while Norman posted 13 to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

Elise Jones paced Doyle with 15 points, while Taylor notched 13 and Megan Watson finished with 10.

Springfield returns to action 5 p.m. Saturday against St. Helena.
