Students from Live Oak High recently took part in the Louisiana Envirothon, an environmental problem-solving competition hosted by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and other state organizations.
Held in Baton Rouge on Saturday, April 13, eight high school teams participated in the competition that included testing in aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife, a current issue and an oral presentation. The 2019 current issue was “Agriculture and Environment: Knowledge and Technology to Feed the World.”
Winning teams received recognition, plaques, medals and cash prizes. Other schools joining Live Oak High at the competition included Calvin High, Caddo Parish Magnet High and Parkview Baptist.
Live Oak High’s FFA Blue team — consisting of Gage McKey, Brennan Stokes, Logan Schesser, Kyle McDaniel and Triston Roberson — finished in third place overall in the Louisiana Envirothon, behind Calvin High and Caddo Parish Magnet.
Additionally, the FFA Blue team also tied for the highest scored in the Current Issue category, alongside the Live Oak High Environmental Club, consisting of Lauren Rogers, Madeline Pastuszek, Marcello Delvisco, Callie Tate and Cassie Pritchard.
LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens was a major sponsor for the 2019 Louisiana Envirothon. Louisiana Science Teachers Association and Louisiana Association of Conservation Districts were patron level sponsors. Detel, Louisiana Environmental Health Association, Bayou Vermilion Preservation Association and an anonymous donor all sponsored at the supporter level. Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers sponsored at the friend level.
Louisiana Envirothon partnered with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry, Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, Louisiana Environmental Education Commission, LSU School of Plant, Environmental & Soil Sciences, LSU Superfund Basic Research Program and Southern University and A&M College–Urban Forestry Program to host the competition.
