DENHAM SPRINGS – The Denham Springs City Council got a chance to meet the newest member of the Police Department.

And he brought his own toy.

Koi, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, and his handler, Officer Joe Babin, visited the City Council meeting on Tuesday.

Police Chief Shannon Womack said Koi has worked six shifts so far and six times has located heroin or methamphetamine.

Koi could be heard in the hall before Babin brought him into the meeting. He barked several times and held on to a piece of pipe when Babin gave it to him.

“He wants to go to work,” Womack said.

Babin said Koi, born in Europe, was brought to the U.S. when he was six months old when his training began.

Koi was purchased from U.S. K-9 Unlimited Inc., of Abbeville, which also trained him and Babin.

It has been 15 years since the Police Department has had a police dog.
