DENHAM SPRINGS – A two-vehicle crash on La. 64 involving a motorcycle took the life of a Denham Springs man Friday evening, according to Louisiana State Police Troop.

Matthew Wheat, 34, was riding southbound on La. 1019 near La. 64 when he was struck by a Honda CRV driven by Wayne Gruenewald, 63, of Zachary. As Wheat merged onto La. 64 to travel westbound, Grunewald turned left into the path of the motorcycle.

Wheat suffered injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, where he died from his injuries, according to Trooper Jared L. Sandifer of the Louisiana State Police.

Impairment on Wheat's part has not been determined, but a toxicology sample will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, as part of a standard procedure.

Grunewald was properly restrained and uninjured. Impairment is not suspected. He was cited LRS 32:104 - Turning movements and required signals.

The crash remains under investigation.
