BATON ROUGE -- Putting the ball in play was a major challenge for both Walker and Scotlandville on Monday. When the Wildcats did make contact, though, they made the most of those opportunities and the Hornets never did.
Sparked again by junior Graham Smith, Walker interspersed a trio of three-run innings among Scotlandville ace Destin Dotson’s 13 strikeouts to blow by the Hornets 9-0.
While the Wildcats were struggling vs. Dotson, the Hornets had even less luck against Walker’s Chase Jeansonne. On the way to shutting Scotlandville out for the second time in two weeks, Jeansonne fanned 15 batters and allowed only 2 hits.
Walker (14-15, 4-4 District 4-5A) won for the third time in four games and improved to .500 in league play for the first time since early last season.
Smith remained red-hot with his fourth consecutive two-hit game buoyed by a two-out, two-run double in the 1st inning that capped the first of the three-run frames and put the Cats in the driver’s seat.
The only time the Hornets (10-19, 0-8) got multiple runners on base was the 1st inning when De’onte Dotson walked with one out and Jamaal Green pushed a single to right field.
Jeansonne mowed down 11 of the next 12 batters and didn’t give up another hit until the 5th inning.
The Wildcats added three more runs in the 6th inning – two on errors and the last on the first of Spencer Murray’s two RBI grounders. Jeansonne doubled home a run, Smith added a third RBI and Murray plated the final run in a three-run 7th.
District 4-5A play continues Tuesday with Scotlandville traveling to Denham Springs High for a 6 p.m. game and Walker playing at Central at 6:30 p.m.
