SPRINGFIELD -- St. Thomas Aquinas scored four runs over the final two innings to pull away for a 10-4 win over Springfield in the District 10-2A opener for both teams Tuesday.
The Falcons led 6-4 heading into the top of the 6th inning when Jacob Becerra drove in a run. STA got five hits in a three-run 7th to cap the scoring.
After the Falcons put up two runs in the top of the 1st inning, the Bulldogs came back in the bottom of the frame as Matt Kreutzer singled in a run and Travis Freeman scored on a passed ball.
STA picked up two more runs in the top of the 3rd to pull ahead 4-2, and the Bulldogs (6-11, 0-1 District 10-2A) cut the lead to 4-3 on Trevor Freeman's RBI grounder.
The Falcons pushed the lead to 6-3 in the top of the 4th and Springfield scored its final run on Keith McKigney's RBI double in the bottom of the inning.
Kreutzer went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Travis Freeman was 2-for-3 with two runs for the Bulldogs, who had 10 hits.
McKigney and Kendall Stanga combined to give up eight earned runs and strike out six for Springfield.
St. Thomas Aquinas hosts Springfield at 6 p.m. Thursday.
