LIVINGSTON -- Doyle wasted no time advancing to the second round of the Class 2A playoffs, coasting past visiting Rayville 15-0 in 3 innings on Monday.
After concluding the regular season on a four-game losing streak, the No. 3-seeded Lady Tigers (19-12) returned to peak form against the Lady Hornets (9-9), racking up 18 hits against just one hit for the visitors.
Monday marked the second straight year Doyle ended Rayville’s season, following a 19-4 clobbering in last year’s opening round that spring-boarded the Lady Tigers to the quarterfinals, tied for their best finish since reaching the 2008 Class 2A title game.
“You worry about these games because you never know who’s going show up or what to expect, but they did exactly what they were supposed to do,” Doyle coach Amanda Decell said. “They played good defense, pitched well and hit the ball on the ground.
“That was the hope and they did it.”
All nine players for Doyle recorded at least one hit as the team went a combined 18-for-25 at the pate against Rayville pitchers Landrea Newton and Kimi Atkins. Kylie Merrell, Caitlinn Fruge and Kaitlyn Savant each finished a perfect 3-for-3, while Sydney Taylor, Madison Diaville and Marley Olivier tallied two hits apiece.
The Lady Tigers jumped to a 7-0 lead in the 1st inning before tacking eight more runs in the bottom of the 3rd, with the final two coming on Merrell’s single to left field to end the game.
With her team providing plenty of run support, Olivier took care of business in the circle. After allowing a one-out single in the top of the 1st, Olivier retired the last eight batters she faced, including four consecutive strikeouts between the 1st-2nd innings.
Doyle’s ace also helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs, including two on an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the 3rd.
“We came out here way more pumped up than we were in the last few games,” Olivier said. “Once we lost those last games, that was a wakeup call that we needed to get pumped up and stay up and not get down on ourselves.
“We did everything correctly as a team: When they got hits, we got the outs; and when we got hits, we scored runs.”
With the victory, the Lady Tigers advance to the second round of the playoffs for the fourth straight year, and they will host the winner of No. 14 Fisher and No. 19 Oakdale after the two clubs square off on Tuesday.
