Walker High football coach Lester Ricard said Thursday afternoon he was still waiting to receive confirmation whether he would coach the Wildcats against Broadmoor, which was scheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m.
A source indicated that Ricard, along with another assistant, would not be on the sideline and that offensive coach Cecil Thomas, a former head coach at Hammond High, would be coaching the team in Ricard’s absence.
It was confirmed before kickoff that neither Ricard or defensive coordinator Marcus Brown were with the team and that Thomas was indeed coaching the team, which defeated Broadmoor 27-6.
When asked in a text message whether he was still Walker’s head coach, Ricard responded, “Absolutely.”
Walker athletic director Korey Arnold wasn't available for comment.
WAFB-TV 9 in Baton Rouge reported Ricard's absence was in response to the Livingston Parish School Board looking into an alleged confrontation that took place several weeks ago at a local restaurant between Ricard and a group of football players from Live Oak High School.
"Our players were just out doing their fellowship on a Thursday night like they always do, out together eating dinner the night before a game," Live Oak coach Brett Beard said. "They were confronted by adults, and from what I understand, caused problems. I know our kids conducted themselves very well, very professionally and I couldn't be more proud of them."
Ricard, a former LSU and Tulane quarterback, directed Walker to a 6-5 record last season, including a 14-7 loss to Landry-Walker in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
The Wildcats opened the season last Friday with a 35-18 victory at Dutchtown.
Nikki Ard, the mother of sophomore quarterback Christian Ard, confirmed that her son has enrolled and begins classes at University High School on Friday.
Christian Ard, who completed 46 of 96 passes for 793 yards and 8 TDs a year ago, was locked in a three-way battle for Walker's starting quarterback position with juniors Ethan McMasters and Landon Adams.
Ard was incomplete in his only pass attempt and rushed once for no gain in last week's win over Dutchtown.
