Springfield High’s drama students to present “The Wizard of Oz” Mar. 31 through Apr. 8

The famous movie line, “There’s no place like home,” has become a theme for many Livingston Parish residents this year following the devastating flooding that left so many homeless.  

But Springfield High School theater students hope the story of a young girl and her dog who are whisked away by a tornado to a magical land will serve as an entertainment break from real life woes.

The students are presenting a live, on-stage performance of “The Wizard of Oz.”  The much-beloved story tells of the adventures of Dorothy and her dog Toto as they follow the Yellow Brick Road to meet the Wizard in hopes of returning home.  Along the way, they meet a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man missing a heart and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage.  

Springfield High School Theatre will transform its school’s stage into the magical landscape of Oz, with its most noted landmark, the Yellow Brick Road, for daily performances Mar.  31 through Apr. 8.

The students will present three shows each day with performances at 9 a.m., noon and 7 p.m.  Admission for each showing is $5.  

The students will also offer a special dinner theater performance on Apr. 8 at 7 p.m. and the admission for that event is $25.  Tickets are on sale at the school office. 

“The students are excited about performing this musical classic,” said Joe Simmons, the drama teacher at Springfield High School.  “The crew has worked so hard to turn the stage into a magical setting.  Our audiences can expect outstanding performances.”

The play is based on the 1939 film starring Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale.  The fantasy storytelling, musical score and unusual characters have made The Wizard of Oz an icon of American popular culture.  

Past performances by the school’s drama club include “The Jungle Book,” “The Emperor’s New Groove,” “Aladdin,” “Lion King” and Peter Pan.
