Housing nonprofit offers assistance in home construction

ALBANY – A nonprofit group that works with people on housing issues will hold a meeting to seek applicants for homes in Livingston Parish.

The Ginger Ford Northshore Fuller Center for Housing will hold the public meeting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at the First Baptist Church in Albany.

Qualifications will be explained, questions will be answered and application packets will be handed out.

Applicants must live in Livingston Parish, have low income, show a need for improved housing, and agree to volunteer 350 “sweat equity” hours working with other volunteers on the construction of their home.

Applications must be returned to The Fuller Center by 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22.

Fuller Center houses typically have three bedrooms, 1½ baths and measure approximately 1,100 square feet.

Because they are built primarily by volunteers, the cost of the homes is kept low, allowing homeowners to pay for the cost of the materials that go into the house on terms they can afford.

A typical house note is approximately $400 per month for 20 years.

The Fuller Center holds the mortgage on the home until the house is paid off. House payments are used to fund other housing construction projects.

Ginger Ford Northshore Fuller Center for Housing, a 501(c)3 nonprofit group, located in Hammond, serves Tangipahoa and Livingston parishes.
