Despite turmoil, Cypress Pharmacy takes leap and opens stand alone store in south Denham Springs

DENHAM SPRINGS — Pharmacist Kyle Wells could call them customers, but the people of Livingston Parish who have followed him have made it a personal bond.

That relationship is continuing at Cypress Pharmacy, which recently opened at 2920 S. Range Ave.

“I began serving the Denham Springs community as a pharmacist when Albertson’s opened,” said Wells, a Denham Springs resident.

“I do what I do,” Wells said simply.

And personal service is the keystone to what he and pharmacy technician Lizie Curtis do, Wells said.

“We really want to help the customers. They tell us as they go out the door that we’ve done a great job and that’s all the boost we need,” he said.

After the Great Flood of 2016 eventually led to the closing of Albertson’s, Wells moved to the Shoppers Value store in Walker, and following him were customers from Denham Springs and as far as Watson.

When Shoppers Value announced the store was closing in December, Wells said he faced a decision.

“We had to decide what direction to go, to close shop or go out,” and establish a stand-alone pharmacy not part of a supermarket, Wells said.

“I went to school in Denham Springs. I live here,” he said. “Back in high school, it was a small town. To see that small town grown and to be part of it is special.”

And again customers followed them.

“I am amazed at our Walker customers who now come to Denham Springs,” Well said, as they also have renewed relationships with customers who saw him at Albertson’s.

“People from Central come here and you know they pass up 12 pharmacies to get to us,” said Curtis, who has 13 years’ experience as a pharmacy technician.

But they had a challenge to move to a new location and have everything in its place so those loyal customers would not miss their prescriptions.

“We had only a couple of weeks to move, get electricity, get permits and get the OK from the Board of Pharmacy,” Wells said.

There was assembling the shelves and putting in the granite counter tops at the new store, then packing up and moving to Denham Springs, all overnight during the New Year’s weekend so Cypress Pharmacy could open on Jan. 2.

The pharmacy offers the “Rx To Go” app that links to its website, Curtis said.

Users can scan the bar code on prescription bottles to get refills, while the app stores a person’s medicine list, all of their doctors’ names and phone numbers, any allergy, insurance information and pharmacy used.

Cypress Pharmacy has its own social media page on Facebook and Internet website.

Immunizations are available at the pharmacy and over-the-counter medications will be available when the helves are installed, Wells said.

Cypress Pharmacy accept all major health insurance and Medicaid. Its hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
