LIVINGSTON PARISH — K-9 Axel has officially retired from the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office following more than six years of service as a dual-purpose patrol and narcotics detection dog.

During his career, K-9 Axel worked alongside two veteran handlers while protecting and serving the community. He pursued and apprehended more than 40 violent or dangerous felons, assisted in hundreds of arrests, and helped detect and remove countless narcotics and illegal firearms from the streets of Livingston Parish.

K-9 Axel and his handlers earned multiple awards and honors, including the Capital Region Crime Stoppers Award and an Excellence in Narcotics Detection Award from the United States Police Canine Association. He also competed and earned national-level certification in law enforcement K-9 standards and trials.

Following his years of service, Sheriff Jason Ard approved the formal adoption of K-9 Axel by his current handler, who will continue to care for him in retirement.

Now officially a civilian, Axel can often be found enjoying time in the sun, taking weekend trips with his family, and settling in for well-earned naps.
