DENHAM SPRINGS, La. – St. Francis Episcopal Church invites the community to bring their furry and feathered companions for a special blessing in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment.
St. Francis, known for his deep love of all living things, is celebrated each year on his feast day, October 4. Around the world, churches mark the occasion with ceremonies that bless pets as a way to honor his legacy of care for creation.
This year, St. Francis Episcopal Church is teaming up with Immaculate Conception Catholic Church to host two local events:
Friday, October 3 at 6 p.m. – A casual evening blessing on the back patio of Le Chien Microbrewery, 101 S. Hummell St., where pets and their families can enjoy fellowship and refreshments in a pet-friendly setting.
Saturday, October 4 at 9:30 a.m. – A community gathering on the lawn at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 726 Maple St., where clergy will offer blessings for animals of every kind.
Organizers note that all pets should be leashed or safely contained, and photos or favorite stuffed animals are welcome, too. Additionally, donations of pet food will be collected for the Denham Springs Animal Shelter, a tribute to St. Francis’ devotion to helping those in need.
Both events are free and open to the public. Families are encouraged to bring their pets for a blessing, and maybe a few extra tail wags.
