BATON ROUGE, La. — A Louisiana-inspired Sonic drink created to raise money for litter prevention is now available at all 138 Sonic Drive-In locations across the state.
Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser joined representatives from Pray Sonic, Sonic, and Keep Louisiana Beautiful on Thursday at the Sonic Drive-In on Siegen Lane in Baton Rouge to celebrate the statewide launch of the Louisiana Blue Pelican Sonic Slush.
The drink will be available at Louisiana Sonic locations through March 27, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Keep Louisiana Beautiful Foundation.
During his remarks Thursday, Nungesser said he had agreed to work a shift at Sonic as part of the campaign to promote the drink. He added that he drew the line at wearing roller skates.
The Blue Pelican Slush combines Sprite, blue coconut flavoring, and sweet cream. Nungesser originally created the drink with carhops in the kitchen of the Sonic in Amite.
The statewide campaign expands a partnership that began in 2025, when Pray Sonic developed the Blue Pelican Slush promotion to raise awareness and money for Keep Louisiana Beautiful. Proceeds from the original promotion supported efforts to prevent marine litter in Louisiana’s waterways.
“There’s nothing more Louisiana than taking something fun, making it our own, and finding a way to give back,” Nungesser said. “The Blue Pelican Slush has taken on a life of its own, and now it is going statewide.”
Nungesser said making the drink available throughout Louisiana gives more people an opportunity to support efforts to protect the state’s communities, waterways, and natural areas.
“Every sip is another opportunity to remind people that keeping Louisiana beautiful starts with all of us,” he said.
Lori Moresi, marketing director for Pray Sonic, said the statewide expansion was the next step for a partnership that began in local communities.
“We started the Blue Pelican Slush because we wanted to create something that was uniquely Louisiana and give our guests a way to Sip with a Purpose,” Moresi said. “What started in our local communities has grown into something much bigger.”
Susan Russell, executive director of Keep Louisiana Beautiful, said the campaign gives residents a simple way to support the organization while encouraging conversations about litter and shared responsibility.
“It brings people together over something they can enjoy while reminding us that small actions can have a big impact,” Russell said.
The promotion’s message, “Sip with a Purpose,” will be featured at Sonic locations across Louisiana, including those in Livingston Parish, throughout the campaign.
