WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.) joined President Donald Trump at the White House this week for the signing of the HALT Fentanyl Act, a bill aimed at permanently scheduling fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act.

Cassidy was one of the Senate co-sponsors of the legislation, which passed the Senate with bipartisan support earlier this year. The bill makes permanent a temporary 2018 measure that allowed law enforcement to treat fentanyl analogues as controlled substances. Supporters say the law will help curb trafficking of synthetic opioids that contribute to overdose deaths nationwide.

The bill passed the House earlier this year with a vote of 289-133 and cleared the Senate with strong bipartisan support, reflecting widespread concern about fentanyl's impact on communities nationwide.

In addition to the bill signing, Cassidy’s office highlighted recent legislative actions he has supported alongside the Trump administration, including a $9 billion spending rescission package and policies related to border security, energy, and manufacturing.

Cassidy, who is up for re-election in 2026, reported raising $2.1 million in the most recent fundraising quarter and said he now holds $9 million in campaign funds. According to campaign finance records, this is the largest war chest ever for a Louisiana Senate candidate at this point in the election cycle.
