DENHAM SPRINGS, La. — Volunteers organized by Denham Springs mayoral candidate John Cavalier’s campaign collected 27 bags of garbage and debris during a Sept. 26 cleanup focused on the city’s sidewalks.
Participants met behind Cavalier House Books before working along portions of the sidewalk network. According to a campaign post, volunteers encountered rocks, debris, overgrown areas, obstructed sidewalk ramps, and fire hydrants surrounded by vegetation.
The event was promoted as the “Volunteer with Cavalier Sidewalk Clean-up Day.” Although organized by the campaign, organizers described it as a community event and invited residents to participate regardless of whom they planned to support in the Nov. 3 election.
Ahead of the cleanup, the campaign said Denham Springs has approximately 18 miles of sidewalks, many of which need maintenance or are not well connected to surrounding areas.
Volunteers brought tools including shovels, hoes, weed trimmers, edgers, wagons, and gloves. Organizers provided lunch and drinks, while Southern Produce stopped by with watermelon for the group.
Cavalier, a no-party candidate, is running against Republicans Jim Gilbert and Ben Harris for mayor of Denham Springs.
