DENHAM SPRINGS, La. - The Denham Springs City Council on Tuesday voted against setting a public hearing to amend the city code on natural gas connection fees, citing the need for a more consistent method of assessing charges.
Council member Robert Poole said he was concerned about discrepancies between what city residents pay for gas hookups and what nearby property owners outside city limits are charged by private contractors.
“We’re going to try to come to some solution so that won’t occur,” Poole said after the meeting.
The proposed hearing had been scheduled for Oct. 14. After raising his concerns, Poole made the motion to deny the item, which was the final matter on the council’s agenda.
In other action, the council tabled condemnation of a flood-damaged structure at 908 South River Road after learning the property has been undergoing rehabilitation.
The council approved several project payments, including:
$175,312.44 to L. King Co. for Denham Springs Vortex grit removal rehabilitation.
$204,095.50 to L. King for the Brignac Water Well project.
$429,996.48 to L. King for the Traveling Bridge Sand Filter rehabilitation.
$46,089.06 to Cape Construction for East Railroad Avenue improvements.
Members also approved:
Street closures for the Antique Merchants Association’s Fall Festival on Oct. 4.
An agreement with SoftKleen LLC to donate soft-wash services twice a year at Kids Korner Playground.
A six-month extension for utility connections in the Deer Run subdivision.
A contract with Caselle to provide software services for the city’s Utilities, Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Accounting departments.
Mayor Gerald Landry said the services had previously been provided through a vendor but will now be offered directly by Caselle.
“The cost will be the same,” Landry said.
