Gov. Landry vetoes $100K for Live Oak High tennis, pickleball courts in 2025 budget

BATON ROUGE, La. — Governor Jeff Landry struck $100,000 in state funding for planned pickleball and tennis court improvements at Live Oak High School in a line-item veto that stood out in a budget otherwise marked by broad spending approvals.

The veto, included in Landry’s final edits to the state’s 2025 supplemental appropriations bill, canceled funds that would have supported the development of new athletic facilities at the Livingston Parish high school. The project aimed to add dual-purpose courts for tennis and pickleball, one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, at the school’s campus in Watson.

Landry’s move comes as part of a limited series of vetoes. While he allowed hundreds of millions in local and statewide projects to proceed, including funding for roads, education facilities and recreational infrastructure across several parishes, he cited the need to rein in unnecessary or duplicative spending in select cases.

The veto contrasts with the governor’s support for several other school facility projects included in the same spending package. No justification was given by Landry for vetoing the funding.
