James L. Byo conducts rehearsal of the 2011-2012 Livingston Parish High School Honor Band prior to the concert at Denham Springs Junior High School. Carl Prince Matthies Professor and Chair of Music Education at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, he is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor. His research, which appears in major journals and texts, encompasses both the teacher/conductors and performers. He has presented it across the country and in England, Spain, Japan and Austria. Byo has served as editor of ÒUpdate: Applications of Research in Music Education,Ó chair of the research division of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and editorial committee member of the Journal of Research in Music Education. Currently, he is the program evaluator for the National String Project Consortium and a member of the National Forum on Research in Motor Learning and Music. A former public school band and orchestra conductor in Ohio, he holds advanced degrees in both music education and oboe performance and performed for eight years with the Youngstown and Wooster Symphony Orchestras. He recently conducted both the Louisiana Junior Youth Orchestra and the LSU Honors Wind Ensemble. He is the author of ÒThe Woodwinds: Performing, Understanding and TeachingÓ and co-author of ÒThe Habits of Musicianship: A Radical Approach to Beginning Band.Ó
