Livingston Parish sees progress in litter abatement, beautification efforts

LIVINGSTON PARISH — A multi-pronged effort to clean up Livingston Parish is beginning to show results, according to Parish President Randy Delatte, who on Tuesday shared an update highlighting recent wins in litter abatement, beautification, and community education.

Over the past several months, the parish has secured more than $25,000 in funding to support cleanup efforts, with grants awarded by Entergy ($5,000), Weyerhaeuser ($10,000), and Keep Louisiana Beautiful (up to $10,000). A separate grant also funded five new trash receptacles.

“This is what hard work and partnership looks like,” Delatte said in a Facebook post. “Parish government, law enforcement, businesses, schools, and YOU working side by side to make Livingston Parish a place we can all be proud of.”

Among the cleanup milestones:

  • 31,300 bags of litter have been removed from parish roads with help from Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office trustees and local partners.

  • 1,500 used tires have been collected — 650 during a free disposal event in March and another 850 through the Rubber Off the Road program.

  • Youth outreach efforts included distributing “Litter-Free Louisiana” workbooks to 4th grade classrooms in 10 parish schools, an Earth Day poster contest at Springfield Elementary, and environmental programming at Camp Empowerment and the Juneteenth Celebration.

  • Beautification projects have added 14 new trees along Government Boulevard, along with flowers and shrubs to enhance public spaces.

The parish is also preparing for its next event: a free Household Hazardous Waste Collection day, part of an ongoing push to provide responsible disposal options and reduce environmental hazards.

Delatte said more grant applications are pending as the parish looks to expand its initiatives.
