Republican candidate Larry Davis announced that he is repositioning his 2026 congressional bid from Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District to the 6th Congressional District, altering the makeup of both races ahead of the May 16 primary. Davis, a Livingston Parish Republican Executive Committee member who initially filed to run for the 5th District seat, submitted updated paperwork this week to run for the District 6 seat instead. Details on his campaign messaging tied to the switch were not immediately available at the time of publication.
Davis had been listed among multiple GOP contenders in the open 5th District seat vacated by Rep. Julia Letlow, who is running for U.S. Senate in 2026. The 5th District field has grown crowded with state legislators, veterans, and local officials since Letlow’s announcement.
District 6 is currently represented by Democrat Cleo Fields, and has a markedly different partisan composition and demographic profile than the heavily Republican 5th District. Redistricting after the 2020 census and subsequent maps have reshaped several Louisiana congressional districts, influencing candidate strategies in both parties this cycle.
Qualifying for congressional races in Louisiana ends Feb. 13, with the closed-party primaries set for May 16 and runoffs, if needed, on June 27.
