BATON ROUGE — Louisiana has officially moved several major public assistance programs to new agencies as part of the state’s One Door initiative, which aims to streamline access to social services and workforce programs.
Effective Oct. 1, 2025, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program (FITAP), Kinship Care Subsidy Program (KCSP), and Disability Determination Services (DDS) are now administered by the Louisiana Department of Health. Two workforce-focused programs — SNAP Employment & Training (SNAP E&T) and Strategies to Empower People (STEP) — have shifted to the Louisiana Workforce Commission, now operating under the name Louisiana Works.
SNAP provides monthly grocery benefits for low-income individuals and families, while FITAP offers temporary cash assistance to help parents support their children. KCSP gives financial support to relatives caring for children when parents are unable to do so. DDS is responsible for reviewing disability claims on behalf of the federal Social Security Administration. The workforce programs moving to Louisiana Works are designed to help recipients gain skills and employment — SNAP E&T for those receiving food assistance and STEP for participants in FITAP.
State leaders say the transition is designed to create a more efficient delivery system for residents who rely on food assistance, cash aid, kinship support, disability determinations, and workforce development services.
