LIVINGSTON PARISH, La. — A traffic stop on a stolen four-wheeler led Livingston Parish deputies to uncover a burglary targeting the home of a recently deceased parish resident, according to Sheriff Jason Ard.
Sheriff Ard said deputies with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office Uniform Patrol Division stopped a man riding an ATV along Highway 441 near George White Road last week. During the stop, deputies found several long guns, a jewelry box, a lockbox, tools, and narcotics in the suspect’s possession.
The rider, identified as Jeremy Wayne Mitchell, 40, was taken into custody after deputies determined the ATV had been stolen.
A follow-up investigation revealed Mitchell had recently broken into a residence on James Chapel Road—the home of a Livingston Parish resident who had recently passed away.
“He made a couple passes at this residence,” Ard said. “We know he took items to a home in Holden using—what we now know to be—a stolen ATV.”
Deputies later executed a search warrant and recovered firearms, bank bags, the deceased’s personal documents, wallet, and credit cards, Ard said.
Thanks to the investigation, deputies were able to return the stolen property to the deceased resident’s family members.
Mitchell is being held at the Livingston Parish Detention Center on multiple charges. The sheriff’s office noted that additional details about his charges and bond status are available through the LPSO mobile app under the “Who’s in Jail?” section.
