LIVINGSTON — The Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam targeting family members of people recently booked into the parish jail.
Sheriff Jason Ard said multiple residents have reported receiving calls from individuals posing as sheriff’s deputies, claiming their loved one at the Livingston Parish Detention Center will be released — but only after paying a fee for an ankle monitor.
“This is a scam. Do not fall for it,” Ard said. “We have received multiple calls from residents who report being contacted by ‘deputies’ within hours of a loved one’s arrest.”
The sheriff’s office emphasized that it does not operate this way and that no legitimate law enforcement agency will ever call and ask for money in exchange for a person’s release.
Officials said the scheme resembles other ongoing scams in the area, including fake warrant calls. Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up and report it immediately to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Residents who believe they may have fallen victim to the scam are urged to contact the LPSO Financial Crimes Division at 225-686-2241.
