FRENCH SETTLEMENT, La. — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced Tuesday that the new permanent bridge on LA 16 over the Amite River in French Settlement is now open to traffic.

The $19.7 million project replaces the decades-old swing span bridge with a fixed concrete structure designed to improve safety and eliminate delays caused by bridge openings.

DOTD officials said the project has been in the works for several years and marks a major infrastructure upgrade for Livingston Parish. Traffic shifted to the new alignment on Tuesday, Sept. 2.
