New life planned for historic Spring Park in Denham Springs

DENHAM SPRINGS — Denham Springs is set for a change as local leaders work together to revitalize Spring Park, an essential piece of the city’s heritage. The effort to breathe new life into Spring Park began some time ago, when Denham Springs Mayor Gerard Landry took a closer look at the historic property and saw both a need and an opportunity.

The park, long tied to the city’s identity and name, had not been properly maintained over the years, Landry said. But even in its worn condition, he saw the potential for Spring Park to become something more.

So when City Clerk Buffy Anderson suggested taking Spring Park on as a project as part of her participation in the Livingston Parish Chamber of Commerce's 2026 Leadership Livingston class,  Landry eagerly accepted. “I planted the seed, and here we are now,” he said, reflecting on the collaborative efforts that have led to the current development plans. Under an official committee, fundraising and project planning have commenced, ensuring that the funds are managed effectively to meet the community’s needs.

Anderson is excited about what the park can offer everyone. “I think the kids could do field trips there,” she said, pointing out the park's potential for educational and recreational use. Plans include a new walking trail usable by people with disabilities, along with benches for visitors to rest and enjoy nature. “It’s going to be a fun project, I believe. I can't wait to break ground on it,” she said.

The project is moving forward with funds from private donations. Anderson said many aspects will benefit from continuing donations, creating community involvement in the park.

An exciting part of the plan is the construction of an amphitheater near the natural spring, which will add green space and provide community gathering areas. This will also include a beautiful pavilion that promises to enhance the park's appeal.

As Mayor Landry and Ms. Anderson look to the future, their commitment to reviving Spring Park shows a strong connection to Denham Springs’ history. Landry commented, “That is our history, right there. That's what formed our city,” reminding residents of the park’s significance. Revitalizing Spring Park is not just about fixing the area; it’s a commitment to the community and its heritage. As plans progress, residents of Denham Springs can look forward to enjoying the renewed space that respects their history while providing a place for fun and relaxation.
