Newly elected Killian mayor proposes Livingston Sheriff’s Office take over town policing for a year

Killian, La. - In a bold move to tackle budget shortfalls, Killian's newly sworn-in Mayor Caleb Atwell is recommending the dissolution of the town's police department for one year and transferring its duties to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The proposal, introduced just nine days into his term, would have the sheriff’s office assume responsibility for all policing in Killian while the town suspends its own department and terminates its three officers, including the chief. The mayor emphasized that this shift is meant to reduce expenses and allow local officials to focus on other pressing issues, such as the town’s water system.

Atwell described the proposal as a strategic pause intended to strengthen long-term growth and improve services. Veteran Killian Police Chief Tim Henderson expressed support for the plan, noting that the sheriff’s office has successfully supplemented local coverage in the past.

The plan will be formally presented at an upcoming town council meeting, with a final vote expected later this month.
