The community of North Corbin Junior High gathered on Tuesday evening to honor a man whose legacy has shaped generations of student-athletes and educators. The school formally dedicated its basketball court to longtime educator and coach, Coach Michael Dumiller, whose signature was added to the court floor this past summer. The ceremony took place just before the Bears hosted the Juban Parc Jaguars.
Principal Erin Jeansonne opened the celebration by welcoming the crowd and recognizing Coach Dumiller’s profound impact on the school and community. “Coach Dumiller taught teamwork, discipline, respect, and the belief that every student could achieve more than they thought possible.” Jeansonne said. “We are honored to have his signature on this court as a reminder of his legacy.”
Assistant Principal Rebekah O’Neal spoke in his honor and shared a personal reflection on her long-standing relationship with Coach Dumiller. O’Neal played softball under his coaching, later taught driver’s education alongside him, and eventually worked with him at both Walker Junior High and North Corbin Junior High, where he served as Assistant Principal before retiring.
“Coach shaped who I was as an athlete, who I became as a teacher, and who I am now as a leader,” O’Neal said. “He believed in his players, his colleagues, and his school. He believed in all of us. This court is a reminder of his dedication to our community.”
Coach Dumiller dedicated 41 years to education, known not only for his coaching achievements but for his mentorship, character, and commitment to student success. He was instrumental in opening North Corbin Junior High, where his pride in the gym and the athletes who played in it were well known.
The ceremony drew a large crowd of former students, fellow educators, community supporters, and family members. Present for the dedication were his wife, Patti Dumiller; children Michelle and Ben Carlton and Michael Dumiller; and grandchildren Cooper, Kyleigh, and Brayden.
As his signature now rests permanently on the court, Coach Dumiller’s influence continues to echo through the halls, locker rooms, classrooms, and lives of those he touched.
The Bears took the court that night not just to play a game, but to honor the coach whose lessons reached far beyond the final buzzer.
North Corbin Junior High will now forever know its court as the Coach Michael Dumiller Court, a fitting tribute to a man who helped build the heart of the Bears.
