Reading Rainbow comes to life at Live Oak Middle School

The Live Oak Middle School library was filled with excitement and reading joy as Mrs. Childres’s class recently connected via Zoom with author, librarian, and the new host of Reading Rainbow, Mychal Threets.

This special experience began a few months ago when students were asked what they would like to do in the library during the spring. One student had a big idea: could they meet the new host of Reading Rainbow? The response was hopeful but honest. “We can try,” Mrs. Jones said. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Mychal Threets, that idea became a reality.

To prepare for the visit, students watched new episodes of Reading Rainbow and spent time developing thoughtful questions of their own. During the Zoom session, students eagerly asked questions such as: Do you read each night before you go to sleep? What is your favorite book? Do you have any pets? Mr. Threets answered each question with warmth, enthusiasm, and a clear love for reading and connecting with young people.

Students also had the opportunity to thank Mr. Threets for the inclusive cover of his upcoming children’s book, I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy, illustrated by Lorraine Nam. The book’s message of belonging and joy resonated deeply with students and reflected the welcoming spirit of the Live Oak Middle School library.

One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was that it was student-driven. What started as a single student’s idea turned into an unforgettable moment for the entire class. Each student in Mrs. Childres’s class will receive a copy of I’m So Happy You’re Here, and additional copies will be available for checkout in the Live Oak Middle School library, ensuring the reading joy can be shared throughout the school community.

This event served as a powerful reminder that libraries are more than places to check out books. They are spaces for inspiration, curiosity, and connection — where student voices matter and big ideas can truly come to life.
