Denham Springs, LA — Seventh Ward Elementary School and the Livingston Parish community will come together on Monday, May 4, 2026, to honor the life and legacy of Mrs. Katy Wells, a beloved school crossing guard who dedicated 40 years to serving and protecting students and families.

A candlelight vigil will be held on the campus of Seventh Ward Elementary School, located at 24495 LA Highway 16, Denham Springs, LA 70726. Community members are invited to begin arriving at 7:30 PM, with the vigil officially beginning at 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Wells was a major presence to generations of students, known for her commitment to safety, her kind spirit, and her ability to make every child and staff member feel seen and cared for.

“Mrs. Katy had a way of making people feel valued the moment they saw her,” said Principal Laura Dunlap of Seventh Ward Elementary. “For decades, she stood in the same place each day, not just directing traffic, but protecting our children and welcoming families with a smile. Her impact on this school and community is immeasurable, and her legacy will continue to live on with all of us.”

In addition to the vigil, relatives and friends are invited to attend memorial services honoring Mrs. Wells on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Hebron Baptist Church, 24063 LA-16, Denham Springs, LA. Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until the memorial service at 12:00 PM.
