Step back in time: Revolutionary War battle commemoration coming to Downtown Baton Rouge

Posted

Looking for an educational weekend adventure that's just a short drive away? History buffs and families seeking something different can journey back 246 years this Saturday when the Sons of the American Revolution commemorate a lesser-known chapter of the Revolutionary War right in downtown Baton Rouge.

The free event at Galvez Plaza begins at 8 a.m. on September 27, marking the anniversary of the Battle of Baton Rouge fought in September 1779. While most people associate the Revolutionary War with battles in places like Lexington and Yorktown, this Mississippi River skirmish played its own role in America's fight for independence.

The ceremony promises to be a visual treat, with SAR members dressed in authentic period uniforms presenting colors and laying wreaths. Michael Elston, the organization's President General, will speak about the battle's significance in the broader independence struggle.

Families will particularly enjoy the photo opportunities with costumed reenactors and the chance to chat with SAR members about their mission to preserve Revolutionary War history. It's the kind of hands-on history lesson that brings textbooks to life for kids and adults alike.

For those wanting to dive deeper, a one-hour mini-symposium follows at 9:15 a.m. in the Old State Capitol's House Chambers, where three historians will explore the battle's history and lasting impact.

The timing works well for a Saturday morning outing before the day gets too warm. Galvez Plaza offers easy downtown access, and the Old State Capitol provides a striking historic backdrop for the follow-up presentations.
