A student at Seventh Ward Elementary was removed from campus Thursday after school administrators discovered an unloaded firearm in the student's backpack while in the school office. No ammunition was found.

Administrators immediately secured the bag and contacted the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office School Resource Officer. School officials say the incident was handled in the office and that no students, employees, or parents were at risk at any point.

The student is no longer on campus, and normal school operations have resumed. The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating. The school system says it will follow appropriate disciplinary policy.

Questions regarding the incident should be directed to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office.
