BATON ROUGE — Today is the deadline to register to vote in person or by mail for Louisiana’s May 16 party primary election, according to Secretary of State Nancy Landry.
Voters who miss today’s deadline can still register online through April 25.
The May 16 ballot will feature federal and statewide races, along with several constitutional amendments.
In Livingston Parish, voters will see party primary races for U.S. Senate on both the Republican and Democratic ballots. Republicans will choose among U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, John Fleming, U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, and Mark Spencer. Democratic candidates include Nicholas “Nick” Albares, Gary Crockett, and “Jamie” Davis.
Voters in the 5th Congressional District will also have primaries in both parties. On the Republican side, candidates include Misti Cordell, Michael Echols, “Rick” Edmonds, Austin Magee, Michael Mebruer, Blake Miguez, and Samuel “Sammy” Wyatt. Democrats on the ballot include Jessee Fleenor, Larry Foy, Lindsay “Rubia” Garcia, Dan McKay, and Tania Nyman.
In addition, a portion of Livingston Parish voters in the 1st Congressional District will vote in the Republican primary between Randall Arrington and U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
State-level races on the Republican ballot include Associate Justice for the Louisiana Supreme Court, 1st District, featuring William “Billy” Burris and Blair Downing Edwards, and Public Service Commission District 1, with candidates Wallace “Wayne” Cooper II, Stephanie Hilferty, “Big John” Mason, Mark Wright, and John Young.
Voters statewide will also consider five proposed constitutional amendments, including measures addressing changes to the civil service structure, the creation of a St. George community school system, funding for teacher pay raises, local property tax authority, and increasing the judicial retirement age from 70 to 75.
Locally, some voters will also decide a 10-mill renewal for Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 1.
Early voting for the primary runs from May 2 through May 9, with Election Day set for May 16. Residents can check their registration status and view sample ballots through the Secretary of State’s GeauxVote system.
