BATON ROUGE — A bill imposing stricter penalties on repeat impaired drivers advanced through the House Appropriations Committee Tuesday.

House Bill 82, authored by Rep. Debbie Villio, R-Kenner, would increase mandatory minimum sentences and raise fines for individuals convicted of a third or fourth DWI offense. Under the bill, a third DWI conviction would carry a minimum five-year prison sentence, while a fourth offense would result in 12 years with no eligibility for parole or probation.
