WALKER, La. — The Walker City Council approved budget amendments for two drainage-related projects during a largely routine meeting Monday.
The council approved an ordinance increasing the budget for work connected to the Gravity Drainage District by $93,750. Under the funding arrangement, the city will cover 25 percent of the cost, the drainage district will cover 25 percent, and the parish will cover the remaining 50 percent.
Council members also approved a budget amendment for drainage improvements along Pendarvis Lane. Mayor Jimmy Watson said the project will affect the Wolf Point area and the Tractor Supply business. The budget for that work was increased by about $95,000.
Watson said work on the Pendarvis Lane drainage improvements is expected to begin Aug. 3 and should be completed within 60 days.
The mayor also announced the temporary closure of the Aydell Lane bridge as repairs get underway. Once reopened during the repair period, the bridge will be limited to one lane, with a two-ton maximum load limit in place until the structure can eventually be replaced.
“It’s going to take about six months, and there will be inconvenience, but unfortunately, it has to be done,” Watson said.
In other business, Police Chief David Addison announced the city will host National Night Out Against Crime on Aug. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Walker Community Center.
