A 64-year-old Walker man was booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center Thursday on charges of vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated, first offense, after a fatal crash outside Gray's Creek Elementary in Denham Springs.
The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office identified the suspect as Darren Goudeau. He was being processed at the parish jail Thursday evening.
Goudeau was driving northwest on Louisiana Highway 16 around 3:30 p.m. when his vehicle struck Katy Wells, a longtime crossing guard who was working her post during afternoon dismissal, according to LPSO. The crash happened near the intersection of Highway 16, also known as Pete's Highway, and Highway 1033, where Gray's Creek Elementary is located.
Wells died as a result of the crash. She had served the Livingston Parish Public School System and the Sheriff's Office in various roles for 40 years.
Sheriff Jason Ard's office said deputies are leading the investigation, which remains ongoing. Bond and a court date had not been set as of Thursday evening.
Vehicular homicide in Louisiana carries a sentence of five to 30 years in prison and a fine between $2,000 and $15,000, with at least three years to be served without probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.
Booking information can be monitored through the LPSO mobile app under the "Who's in Jail" feature.
