Superheroes, costumed characters, local authors, and rows of vendors took over the Livingston Parish Library on Saturday as Book-Con returned for its annual celebration of books and fandoms.

The Sept. 19 event ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and drew a large crowd of vendors and attendees.

Balloon twisting, magnet making, temporary tattoos, I Spy rooms, free book giveaways, and superhero meet-and-greets provided the backdrop for the wide range of activities available inside the library.

To the surprise and delight of younger attendees, Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen posed for pictures before superhero story time. Many children wasted no time lining up to show off their best web-slinging and supervillain-punching poses.

Outside, a large tent housing several authors occupied much of the library’s front lawn. Among them were several authors featured in the library’s past author Q&A event, including Stephanie Fournet, Jack Caldwell, Alyssa Lonergan, Holly Rose, Lynn Shurr, and Donnie Smith.

Other authors and booksellers included R. W. Mcnabb, Lauren Sevier, Abbie Lynn Smith, Renee Hudson, Holly Stone-Barker, and Amy Tindell. Cavalier House Books and Carpe Librum Crafts were also prominently featured with a mini bookstore and book crafts tent.

As the Livingston Parish Library described in a Facebook post, “from comics and collectibles to handmade crafts, resin art, crochet, jewelry, and one-of-a-kind fandom finds – our vendors at Book-Con will have something for every kind of fan!”

The USS Corsair, a chapter of Starfleet International, also had its own booth, encouraging aspiring Starfleet Cadets to join and begin their journey toward becoming an Officer alongside fellow Star Trek fans from across the Baton Rouge area.

One of the most anticipated events of Book-Con was the cosplay contest. Throughout the convention grounds, attendees dressed as their favorite characters from books, comics, movies, and TV series, including Satoru Gojo, Roronoa Zoro, Finn the Human, Freddy Fazbear, Nezuko Kamado, Annabeth Chase, Himiko Toga, and Batman.

The all-ages event gave friends and families a place to gather, celebrate their favorite books, fandoms, and shows, and explore the work of local authors and the library resources available in Livingston Parish.
